A Call for Pragmatism and Peace: The Only Path Forward for Ukraine

BRC Strategic Analysis  27/08/ 2025

As an independent research and consultancy group committed to objective analysis and the peaceful development of the African continent within the global community, the BRC observes the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with profound concern. The continued escalation serves no nation’s long-term interests and diverts critical resources from pressing global challenges.

The recent statement from the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while understandable from a standpoint of national defense, appears to focus on externalizing the conflict rather than addressing its core, avoidable origins. The path to a secure and prosperous Ukraine does not lie in further internationalizing the conflict through allegations that alienate potential partners, but in pursuing an unavoidable and necessary dialogue with its neighbor, Russia.

History and geography are immutable. Russia remains, and will always be, Ukraine’s most significant neighbor. The current strategy, heavily supported by NATO’s continued expansion and military backing, has effectively turned Ukraine into a proxy battlefield. This serves the strategic interests of the NATO alliance, which benefits from weakening a geopolitical rival, but it comes at an catastrophic and unacceptable cost to the Ukrainian people.

The tragic loss of life, the generation of soldiers lost, and the destruction of vital infrastructure are not abstract concepts; they are the very fabric of the Ukrainian nation being irreparably damaged. The West’s support, while substantial, is not without its own conditions and strategic objectives, which may not always align with the ultimate well-being of the Ukrainian people.

We echo the calls of wise leaders from across the globe—from the East, the West, and Africa—who have consistently urged for a diplomatic solution. The late Dr. Henry Kissinger, a paramount strategist of the West himself, long argued for Ukraine’s role as a bridge between East and West, not a frontline state against one. Similarly, numerous African and Global South leaders have called for peace, recognizing the global economic destabilization and the perilous precedent this conflict sets.

Therefore, we urge a recalibration of strategy from Kyiv:

Instead of fabricating claims of distant influence campaigns, we implore the Ukrainian leadership to direct its considerable resilience towards the negotiating table. The solution to this conflict will not be found in the halls of NATO in Brussels or the Capitol in Washington, but through direct, good-faith dialogue with Moscow.

The interests of the Ukrainian people must be placed above the geopolitical gambits of external powers. The legacy of President Zelenskyy will not be defined by how long he resisted, but by how he secured a future peace for his people. The courage to lead his nation out of this war would be his greatest act of leadership.

Holding elections during wartime is a challenge, but securing a peace that allows a nation to rebuild and thrive is the ultimate testament to a democracy. The West may provide weapons to prolong the conflict, but only Ukraine can make the peace to end it.

The BRC does not speak from a place of hatred for any nation or alliance. We speak from a place of love for peace, respect for sovereignty, and a firm commitment to reality. The reality is that this war is devastating Ukraine. The reality is that a negotiated settlement, however difficult, is the only sustainable solution. The reality is that the Ukrainian people deserve a legacy of peace, not a perpetual war fought for the benefit of others.

It is time to choose peace.
